If you enjoy phlebotomy and providing exceptional patient care, this is a unique opportunity to put your skills to work in a high-volume clinical setting. This position is based in our Pediatrics department and supports patients across Pediatrics, Urology, OB/GYN, and General Surgery.

Your primary responsibility will be performing laboratory specimen collections, ensuring patients have a positive experience while receiving safe, accurate, and efficient care. During slower periods in the lab, you'll assist providers and the care team with traditional Clinic Technician duties, making this a well-rounded role with a variety of responsibilities throughout the day.

  - Full-time, 40 hours per week, 5x8 hour shifts

This position is responsible for the collection and receipt of biological specimens, proper entry into the computer system, preparation of samples for analytical testing, and/or distribution of these specimens to the proper analytical area. This includes responsibility for pre and post aspects of analytical testing. This position will also perform specified analytical testing as assigned. This position may perform duties associated with blood donor registration services.

1. Performs specimen collection and patient preparation, ensuring correct patient and specimen identification and specimen integrity by using appropriate techniques as required. May perform assigned patient testing. May perform collections for drug and alcohol screening, following chain of custody protocols. May transport patient specimens and/or patients, per guidelines.

2. Aliquots and labels specimens according to established departmental procedures and practices, delivers specimens to the technical area in a timely manner and / or performs initial processing and preparation of samples for transport.

3. Performs registration processes including collecting insurance information, verifying coverage of Advanced Beneficiary Notices, obtain authorizations and signatures. Verifies patient demographics, insurance, and diagnostic test information, and accurately enters data into appropriate systems to ensure accurate documentation and billing.

4. Focuses on quality by assuring that all work performed is accurate and complete. Initiates computer generated reports as required for patient reporting and quality assurance monitoring. Completes documents and records legibly and accurately per site protocol. Maintains familiarity with departmental procedures. Uses appropriate documentation to record communications.

5. Communicates with physicians, clinical and hospital staff, nursing and Health Information Management Services to resolve outstanding issues and/or patient concerns. Acts as a liaison between the patient and lab charge services department to resolve outstanding issues, patient concerns, and maximize service excellence.

6. Maintains laboratory equipment. Maintains clean, safe work environment and makes appropriate reagents/bleach.

7. Performs other technical support functions as determined by the department. Trouble shoots routine problems within their area of responsibility.

8. Assists with inventory management and ordering of supplies. Recognizes and provides input towards opportunities for improvements in work practices, and processes.

• High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge.
• Phlebotomy certification is required upon hire. BLS certification is required.
• Must be able to communicate effectively in both oral and written formats. May be required to possess a valid driver’s license and be eligible for coverage under the company auto insurance policy.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

• Additional related education, certifications and/or experience preferred.
• Previous specimen processing and send out experience preferred.
