Overview

This position provides routine patient care in order to promote patient comfort and contribute to the overall patient plan of care. This position is responsible for on-going patient data collection and documentation in the medical records and provides a variety of unit support functions which contribute to the overall efficient operation of the nursing unit/department. Under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse, this position selects and places instruments, supplies and equipment for delivery procedures. This position also scrubs and provides surgical instruments, sutures, and other sterile supplies during Cesarean Sections.

This position is working in the Labor and Delivery unit with duties to include working as an OB Scrub Tech, Patient Care Tech as well as Unit Secretary and Receptionist for the Front Women's Center Nursing Desk.  

 

  • Compensation: $21.39- $33.43 hourly wage based on experience and education

Responsibilities

  1. Prepares for surgical procedures. Pulls appropriate instruments and supplies and ensures good working order of instruments. Anticipates the surgeon's needs and ensuring surgeon preference cards and pick lists are accurate. Passes instruments, retracts tissue and operates equipment during surgery. 
  1. Demonstrates the principles of aseptic technique and universal precautions throughout the procedure. Disposes of sharps and trash, and places used supplies into case cart for processing. Participates in counting of sharps, instruments and sponges. Prepares instruments for cleaning following each case. 
  1. Provides assistance in activities of daily living and completes necessary tasks to promote patient health, including assisting patients with basic hygiene needs, maintaining an optimum level of mobility, and providing assistance with nutritional intake as needed. 
  1. Collects patient specimens and data, including vital signs, input/output and other delegated measurements in accordance with unit/facility policy and standards of care. Documents objective data and routine aspects of patient care. Assists in the transportation of patient specimens.

  2. Recognizes and reports abnormalities and/or changes in the patient’s health status and responses to treatment to a licensed professional. Promotes continuity of care by accurately and completely communicating to other caregivers the status of patients for which care is provided. 
  1. Performs procedures and uses equipment as delegated by a licensed professional, consistent with demonstrated competencies and according to state scope of practice. 
  1. Performs receptionist/clerical duties to support overall operating efficiency and effective flow of communication and information throughout the department. Maintains adequate levels of patient paperwork. Maintains adequate levels of office, dietary, and medical supplies.

 

Performs all functions according to established policies, procedures, regulatory and accreditation requirements, as well as applicable professional standards. Provides all customers of Foundation Health with an excellent service experience by consistently demonstrating our core and leader behaviors each and every day.

Qualifications

High school diploma/GED or equivalent working knowledge and current basic life support certification. Current State of Alaska C.N.A. license. Where applicable must be registered with State Regulatory Agency.

 

The position requires manual dexterity and the ability to maintain professional decorum in highly stressful emergent situations. The position requires the ability to be conscientious, organized, and orderly and the ability to respond quickly to the needs of the surgeon and patient. 

 

Must stay abreast of new developments in the field.

 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

1 year of medical clerical experience; preferably in a hospital or physician office setting.

 

Graduation from a certified school of surgical technology or operating room experience.

 

Additional related education and/or experience preferred.
